Sharing the Gospel: From Commission to Conversation
Part 3 of the “One More Disciple” Blog Series
By Josh Smith
You’ve been praying. You’ve been investing. Maybe you’ve even invited your One Disciple into your life, your group, or your church. But now you’re asking: How do I actually talk about Jesus?
Or in One More Disciple terms: How do I “introduce naturally”?
That question can feel paralyzing. What if I say something wrong? What if I can’t answer their questions? What if they shut down?
Take a deep breath. The goal of evangelism isn’t to have all the right answers—it’s to be faithful. Faithful to listen. Faithful to speak. Faithful to trust the Spirit to do what only He can do.
You’re not closing a deal. You’re making an introduction.
Asking Good Questions
One of the best ways to begin a gospel conversation is to ask good questions—simple, honest, and open-ended. You’re not looking for a script. You’re just being curious and compassionate.
Here are a few places to start:
- “Do you have any spiritual beliefs?”
- “What do you believe about Jesus?”
- “Do you think there’s a heaven or hell?”
- “What do you think happens after we die?”
Listen well. Ask follow-ups. Let them share.
If they express a different view or an unclear version of Christianity, gently say: “Thanks for sharing that. I actually believe something a little different. Would you mind if I told you what I believe?”
That question often opens the door. You don’t need to force anything. Just be honest, humble, and available.
Telling Your Story, Sharing His
Start with your story.
- What was your life like before Christ?
- How did you come to know Him?
- How has He changed you?
Keep it short—2–3 minutes. Be real. Be specific. You’re not trying to impress anyone. You’re simply showing what grace looks like up close.
Then share His story.
Here are two helpful tools to keep in mind:
The Romans Road
- Romans 3:23 – All have sinned
- Romans 6:23 – The wages of sin is death
- Romans 5:8 – Christ died for sinners
- Romans 10:9,13 – Confess and believe to be saved
- Romans 5:1; 8:1, 38–39 – Peace and security in Christ
The Gospel Outline
- God – Holy and Creator (Isaiah 6:1–3; Colossians 1:16–17)
- Man – Sinful and separated (Romans 3:9–12; Isaiah 59:2)
- Christ – Savior and substitute (Romans 5:6–8; 1 Corinthians 15:3–4)
- Response – Repent and believe (Romans 10:9–11; John 1:12)
- Cost – Follow Him (Luke 9:23–24; 1 Peter 1:18–19)
You don’t have to use every verse. Use what fits the moment. Speak from the heart. Let your story and the gospel flow together.
In Your Growth Group
This week, take time during group to practice your testimony. Use this structure:
- Life before Christ
- How you met Christ
- How He’s changed your life
Keep it to 2–3 minutes. Encourage each other. Offer feedback. Help one another grow in clarity and confidence.
When you share your story in a safe space, it becomes easier to share it in real life. And when your group practices together, you remember that evangelism is something we do—not something you do alone.
You Don’t Have to Be Perfect. Just Present.
You might stumble. You might forget a verse. You might leave the conversation unsure how it went.
That’s okay.
Your job is to plant the seed. God’s job is to make it grow.
The more you step into these conversations, the more natural they’ll feel. And the more you’ll see that God really does use ordinary people to do extraordinary things.
Action Step:
Prepare and share your testimony in your Growth Group.
Keep it short. Keep it real. Practice now—so you’re ready when the moment comes.
